Beaufort is North Carolina’s third-oldest town, established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723. It’s rich in maritime history, pirate legends, and Southern charm. A few fun facts:
- Blackbeard the Pirate once roamed these waters — his ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, sank just offshore in 1718.
- The town’s Old Burying Ground dates back to 1731, with tombstones of sailors, soldiers, and even a legend of a child buried in a rum barrel.
- In 1747, the town was invaded by Spanish privateers. Locals rallied to defend Beaufort and drove the attackers out — a moment still remembered on a downtown historical marker. The popular annual Beaufort Pirate Invasion is inspired by history surrounding that event.
- Beaufort was once a bustling colonial port and safe haven for privateers.
- Many historic homes in the district still stand today — some with cannonball scars from the War of 1812!
You can explore much of this history by visiting the Beaufort Historic Site, taking a guided walking tour, or simply wandering the tree-lined streets near the Inlet Inn.
Guests love:
- North Carolina Maritime Museum
- Historic Old Burying Ground (est. 1731)
- Beaufort Historic Site & tours
- Spotting playful dolphins and wild horses on Carrot Island from their own balcony!
Inlet Inn is right in the middle of Beaufort’s historic waterfront district. Local restaurants, boutiques, and galleries are just a short stroll away.
